21c Museum Hotel opened in 2015 as the first boutique hotel in Downtown Durham. The $53 million, 125-room hotel features its own high-end restaurant, Counting House, and a 10,500 SF art exhibition space on the second floor that is open to the general public. It is the Museum Hotel chain’s second largest art exhibition room, behind its property in Bentonville, Arkansas.

The Art Deco Hill Building opened its 15-stories in 1937, and, for much of its history, housed offices for local bank operations for CCB and SunTrust banks. Having sat mostly vacant for many years, the building underwent extensive renovation and modernization of all systems in addition to being upfit for a luxury hotel, gallery and restaurant. The building’s original terrazzo floors were saved and the buildings original windows were repaired and reused.
