Overview

Project Highlights: In addition to providing 125 hotel rooms, the property has an active modern art museum with exhibits that regularly change.

After acquiring approximately 20% of the distressed buildings in the area, Carl Webb and Michael Lemanski were focused on creating a master redevelopment plan for Durham’s Center City. They realized a high-quality, community-focused hotel would create the most value for the surrounding district. Instead of viewing it as a stand-alone project, they used the building’s successful redevelopment as a catalyst to spur additional redevelopment.

In 2006, Webb and Lemanski were able to attract a boutique hotel management company and development partner in 21c Museum and Hotels. The partnership helped to increase demand for the nearby retail spaces. The development of the hotel and the related retail helped to create an inclusive space in downtown Durham.
